Computer-Based Learning Game

Client Objective:

Create an interactive, computer-based learning game that provides the Geriatric medical community with educational information on how to respond to an emergency situation. This game was commissioned by the Gateway Geriatric Education Council in Saint Louis, Missouri.

BEC coordinated:

  • Developed blueprint, graphics, programming and design for ‘Emergency Preparedness’ CD-Rom based game that can be played in group settings (specifically for educational meetings) and played by a single person.
  • Developed six different scenarios that played on screen with images and sound. Players answer multiple questions for each scenario. Based on how the player answers each question determines their overall geriatric population size for this scenario. (Scenario example: Power-outage at high-rise nursing home in urban setting. The player answered questions based on how they would respond to this situation as the main decision maker.) Players are given a final Emergency Preparedness score at the end of the game.
  • BEC programmed this game in Macromedia Authorware program.
  • All content was provided by client and was based on their expertise in geriatric medicine.
  • Developed packaging and artwork for cd-rom distribution by Gateway Geriatric Education

Conclusion for 2003-2004 lectures:

  • Emergency Preparedness Game was well-received by Audience at Saint Louis University Summer Institute, June 2004. Currently, the Gateway Geriatric Education Council is distributing CDs to physicians throughout country.
